A long, open-front robe in crinkle cotton, cut like a cardigan rather than a wrap: no buttons and no belt, just two front panels that fall straight from the shoulder. The collar, front edges and pocket openings are finished with a fine contrast piping, which gives the opening a defined line against the crinkle surface. The cotton is garment-washed after sewing, which sets the crinkle and gives the surface a slightly irregular, lived-in texture. Shown here in lilac and in blush pink, both with the same piping.

Crinkle cotton is woven first and then treated - either by a caustic finish or by garment washing with the garment knotted or pressed - so the texture is set into the cloth rather than pressed in. Because the fabric has already shrunk and distorted, the pattern has to be cut with extra allowance along the front edges and hem, or an open front will hang unevenly. Contrast piping on a crinkle fabric has to be applied before washing, so the trim takes the same crinkle as the body.
