A pull-on lounge short in heathered modal jersey, with a smocked elastic waist, side-seam pockets and a leg that opens to mid-thigh. The waist is gathered on multiple rows of elastic rather than a single band, so it sits flat and does not twist inside the channel. The fabric is a modal single jersey with a light peach finish, which is what gives the surface its soft, slightly dusty hand. Shown in charcoal heather; the same block can be run in lighter heathers for spring.
Fabric & Construction — Modal Smocked Waist Shorts
A smocked waist is stitched with elastic threads running through the seam, so the gathering is built into the construction instead of added by a separate band. Done well, it spreads the tension over several rows and the waist returns to shape after stretching; done cheaply, one row takes all the load and the waist goes slack within a season. On a modal jersey the waistband also has to be stabilised, because the fabric is soft enough to grow under the elastic. The panel is fused lightly at the channel, the elastic is pre-shrunk, and the pocket bags are cut from the same jersey so they do not shadow through.
