A shortie set lives or dies on two measurements: where the shirt hem lands and how short the short is cut. If the shirt is too long the set reads as a long pyjama with the legs taken up; if the short is too long the proportion collapses into a boxer. The block is set so the shirt finishes at the high hip and the short sits at a true shortie length, and both are sampled together rather than separately, because the gap between them is what the eye actually reads. The turned-back cuff on the sleeve is a double-layer finish, so it holds its fold through washing without a stitch line on the outside. On a gingham, the check is a yarn-dyed pattern rather than a print, which means every panel is cut on the straight grain and the check is matched at the placket and pocket by hand - on a knit this is slower than on a woven, because the cloth wants to move while it is being matched. Piping is applied with the same knit-tape stabilisation used on the long set, so the collar point survives the wash.
