A toile is the least forgiving print to cut, because the motifs are large and directional. If the panels are laid for yield instead of for the print, a Christmas tree ends up sliced by the button placket and a house runs upside down down the leg. We lay every panel by hand against a printed strike-off, match the motif across the front placket, and accept the extra fabric consumption rather than ship a set that reads as a cheap print. The ruffle cuff is where the construction budget goes. Each ruffle is a separate strip, edge-finished, gathered to a fixed ratio and set into the sleeve in the round; gathering by eye gives one cuff that flares and one that lies flat, which is immediately visible in a flat-lay. Gingham piping is cut on the bias so it follows the collar roll and the pant hem without puckering, and it is stitched over the seam so the check stays continuous. The pant is on a covered elastic with a drawcord running in a channel, and the set is washed after making so the cotton blend softens and the toile loses its printing stiffness before it reaches the customer.
