Pointelle is one of the few sleepwear knits where the machine matters more than the pattern. The openwork column is formed on the machine, so the short has to be cut on the straight grain and the panels matched at the side seam or the vertical columns break and the garment reads as a plain rib. The brushed interior is raised after knitting, which softens the hand but also removes some of the stitch definition - so the brushing is kept light on the face and heavier on the inside, and the two sides are specified separately. The waistband is a covered elastic set into a gathered channel; the gather is distributed by section rather than pulled evenly, so the folds fall the same way at front and back. Because pointelle relaxes after the first wash, the block is cut with a shrinkage allowance and the finished short is washed before packing, so the mid-thigh length arrives where it was specified.
