A waffle knit behaves differently from a jersey in three ways, and all three change the pattern. It is thicker, so the waistband has to be narrower in the channel or the elastic bunches; it is less elastic, so the leg needs real width rather than stretch to clear the thigh; and it shrinks more in the wash, because the raised cells relax and pull the cloth in. We cut the block with a measured shrinkage allowance and confirm it after three wash cycles, not one, because a waffle keeps tightening on the second and third wash before it settles. The waistband is a covered elastic in a channel finished flat at the front, so the pant reads as a pull-on rather than a gathered waist. The brushed interior is raised on the inside face only, which keeps the waffle grid visible on the outside while the skin side stays soft. The hem is finished with a twin needle so it keeps the cloth's natural stretch and does not curl at the ankle.
