Stripe & Leg — Modal Pajama Shorts

A horizontal stripe on a short has one enemy: the leg curve. If the leg is tapered or the side seam is pulled, the stripe bows across the hip and the garment looks like it was cut from a longer pant. The block is therefore cut straight from waist to hem with the side seam left vertical, and the stripe is matched at that seam so the line runs unbroken from front to back. Because the stripe is yarn-dyed, the panels are cut on the straight grain and laid so the repeat lands at the same point on both legs - with a printed stripe this is a visual check, but with a yarn-dyed stripe a mismatch is a weaving complaint that shows up in the photograph. The waistband is a covered elastic in a narrow channel, gathered by section rather than pulled evenly, so the stripe folds consistently at the front. Modal is washed after making, which softens the cloth and settles the stripe at its final width rather than the width it had on the roll.
